History Of The Society

The Geological Society of Kenya was mooted in 1972 by the few indigenous Kenyan geologists who were present at the time. The first meeting of the proposed Society was convened by Prof I.O.Nyambok, Mr W.Okoth and Mr S.Bwire-Ojiambo on October 28th, 1972 at the Mines and Geological Department. Twelve geologists attended this meeting and presented the case for the necessity of formation of the Society.

The constitution was drafted and completed in 1973 leading to the official establishment of the Geological Society of Kenya on the 18th of August 1973 at Madini House, Mines and Geology Department. The Society was registered under the Society Act 1968 on the 5th of February 1974 and the inauguration ceremony held on April 19th 1974 at the University of Nairobi, with the Hon. William O. Omamo then Minister for Natural Resources as the Guest of Honour (Represented by his Assistant Minister Hon. S.Kioko).

Membership of the Society is open to individuals and institutions operating within Kenya. The funding of the Geological Society of Kenya is mainly from committed membership initiatives and cooperate membership (Geothermal Development Company, Kengen) and Ministry of Mineral Resources and Ministry of Water and Irrigation. The other source of finance in UNESCO.To all we extend our appreciation.
