  • Members of the society are eligible to attend General Meetings of the Society and participate in all Society’s activities, which enhances their professional networks and builds their CPDs
  • All Professional Members, Graduate Members and Corporate Members of the Society are eligible to vote at the Annual General Meetings and other meetings called for by the Governing Council.
  • Members of the society contribute, individually and collectively, in developing the Society in the way they aspire
  • Qualified members who apply or are nominated to statutory or public bodies benefit from endorsement of the Governing Council

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Interested people who meet qualifications for membership can initiate the process of joining the Society by making an application in which they sign a membership declaration form to abide by the Society’s Constitution and By-Laws, and to be bound by the Principles of Professional Code of Conduct (by-law 8).
  • An applicant must be proposed by two up-to-date members from personal knowledge and two from general knowledge. The two members indicated as acquainted with the applicants from ‘’personal knowledge” MUST be professional GSK members who are up-to date with their current annual subscription i.e. current year.
  • Membership application MUST be made on prescribed Application Form downloadable from this website, and accompanied with the application fee and the first annual subscription.
  • Applications to join or upgrade membership to professional category can only be successful once a member has been interviewed by the Society’s professional committee.
  • All applications for membership must be received no later than the 15th of each month for consideration by the professional committee sitting during that month.
  • All successful applicants shall be confirmed by the Governing Council at the earliest opportunity.
  • A certificate of membership shall be issued to the admitted member by the Governing Council.

MEMBERSHIP FEES

  • The Governing Council shall recommend to the General Meeting a review of the amount of fees payable for Entrance, Transfer of Membership Class and Annual subscription.
  • The first annual subscription shall be accompanied with an application for membership and the membership fees and thereafter the annual subscription shall be due by the 1st of January of each year. The scales for annual subscriptions shall be as follows:

FELLOWS OF THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF KENYA

The Fellow of the Geological Society of Kenya (FGSK) awards were initiated in March 2008, when the founding members of the Society were honoured with the award during a luncheon that was held at the Grand Regency Hotel. FGSK is awarded to the society’s professional members for their outstanding and exemplary works in the field of geosciences as well as those who improve the welfare of geo-scientists.

In the inaugural awards the following founding members were honored:

On 25th March 2011, six outstanding geologists were awarded as follows:

  • Geol. Prof. Eric Odada – Member of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation, Professor of Geology at the University of Nairobi and distinguished service to the African Scientific Community on global Change Research and Capacity building through the International Decade for the East African Great Lakes (IDEAL).
  • Geol. Mrs. Margaret Maimba – Chief Science Secretary and head of Environmental and Earth Sciences, National Council of Science and Technology (NCST).
  • Geol. Dr. Daniel Ichang’i –Chairman of the Association of Professional Societies of East Africa (APSEA), Senior Lecturer in Geology at the University of Nairobi and Order of the Grand Warrior.
  • Geol. Mrs. Monica Omulo – Founder Member and First President of the African Association of Women Geoscientists (AAWG) and Member of the Governing Council of the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf)
  • Geol. Mr. Fred Mwango – Head of Transboundary Waters, Ministry of Water and Irrigation
  • Geol. Prof. Norbert Opiyo-Akech – Task Leader of Working Group B of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and Professor of Geology at the University of Nairobi.
